Aberdeen Airport - ABZ
A Brief History
Aberdeen Airport or Aberdeen/Dyce Airport is based in Dyce, north-west of the city of Aberdeen. In 1931, a piece of land in Dyce was acquired with the intention of operating a public aerodrome which opened in 1934 and was intended to link the northern islands of Scotland with London. During WW II it became an RAF base to provide protection from German bombing raids from Norway but was mainly used as a photographic reconnaissance base.
The airport was nationalised in 1947 and became part of the British Airports Authority (BAA) and with the discovery of North Sea oil, helicopter operations began in 1967, linking the oil rigs to the mainland.
Traffic
As Aberdeen became the largest oil-related centre in Europe, the airport became the world's largest commercial heliport handilng more than 37,000 helicopter flights carrying around 468,000 passengers annually (almost half of the traffic at Aberdeen Airport.)
The Future
In the future Aberdeen Airport plans to extend the main runway bringing the possibility of direct flights to the United States and the Caribbean.
