Demolition of redundant bridges on the M1 in the Hemel Hempstead area will close the motorway near Luton Airport for three consecutive Saturday nights starting next weekend. The work is part of the major widening between junctions 8 and 9 that has caused delays for passengers over the last 6 months and requires a complete closure of the motorway in both directions.
The demolition’s will take place overnight on 9 June, 16 June and 23 June, with traffic management starting at 20:00 and a full motorway closure from 21:00. The motorway will remain closed for 12 hours, only reopening at 09:00 on Sunday morning.
There will be fully signed local diversion routes for northbound and southbound traffic. If you are travelling to Luton Airport from the north you should not be affected by the diversion route. If you are travelling to the airport from the south you will be diverted off the M1 at Junction 8 and back on at Junction 9, from where you will follow the airport signs.
You may want to consider an overnight stay before your journey to avoid any major problems. Check out availability at Parking4less.
