Airline plans low cost Stansted - Cape Town flights

A new low-cost airline flying between Stansted Airport and Cape Town could be launched later this year, the Telegraph has reported.

The newspaper says that the airline is to be named Redair. It is the creation of a South African aviation entrepreneur, Andy Cluver, who currently operates a helicopter service for visitors wanting to fly over Table Mountain.

The new airline plans to offer five return flights a week from Stansted to Cape Town. Flights to Cape Town will be sold from £142 one-way, excluding tax. Additionally, it will offer services between Cape Town and Barcelona and Malaga.

Fingerprinting at Heathrow Terminal 5

British Airways passengers using Heathrow's high-tech new Terminal 5, due to open in March, will have to undergo advanced security measures, including those taking domestic flights. Passengers flying from Heathrow to Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester or Newcastle will be photographed and fingerprinted as part of the increased security at the hub. The enhanced procedures will make sure that the passengers presenting themselves at the gate are the same people who checked in.

The extra measures are due to the design of the new terminal which is, in effect, one giant departure lounge. Without the measures, international passengers changing flights could conceivably swap boarding passes with a domestic passenger and, with fake identification, enter the UK without passing through immigration.

New Concorde super hangar

Manchester Airport’s iconic Concorde is to get a new £1 million super hangar and visitor centre.

The now retired supersonic aircraft, which was the pride of the British Airways fleet and has been on display at Manchester Airport since 2003, is to get a new home designed to protect her from the elements and boost visitor numbers.

Work is due to start on the £1.1 million, 68 metre by 38 metre, glass, steel and high tech PVC structure early in Spring and is due to be completed and open to the public by the end of July.

Concorde G-BOAC is the central attraction in the 250,000 visitor a year Aviation Viewing Park at Manchester Airport and is also a licensed wedding venue where many couples have tied the knot on board the aircraft which, when she flew, was capable of twice the speed of sound.

The new development will also include a corporate hospitality suite capable of housing up to 75 delegates, an education centre for school tours, an aviation exhibition and a glass-walled visitor restaurant alongside Concorde with views of Manchester Airport’s busy runways.

BA to launch flights to Paphos

British Airways has announced that it is set to launch a new route to Paphos in Cyprus from Gatwick Airport this summer.

The flights will begin on July 1st and will run on a daily basis, adding to the airline's current services between Heathrow Airport and Larnaca.

Paphos is a scenic harbour town that was the capital of Cyprus for over 700 years under the Romans and features spectacular beaches and numerous historical attractions.

Marianna Trokoudes, Cyprus commercial manager for British Airways, commented: "Paphos is ... very popular with UK travellers and the growing economic importance of the town and region are just a few of the reasons why we feel this service will be very well received in Cyprus and in the UK."

Meanwhile, holidaymakers travelling to Cyprus this year could find it easier to deal with currency after the country, along with Malta, officially adopted the euro at the start of this month.

Thousands of weapons seized at Newcastle Airport in 2007

Weapons ranging from knuckle-dusters to cleavers have been seized from holidaymakers at Newcastle Airport.

In 2007, security staff confiscated thousands of items from passengers arriving or departing from Newcastle International Airport.

Airport duty manager Jon Sunderland said: "Over the course of the year, a number of prohibited items are confiscated from passengers.

"Many are sharp items, some of which are actually illegal and are referred to the police, and have all come from passengers' baggage.

"They can range from scissors to replica firearms or even real firearms.

"In most cases, sharp items that are confiscated are innocent.

"We have a lot of incidents of people taking extra kitchen knives out to holiday homes on the continent and things like that, but unfortunately we can't let people travel with them."

As well as the weapons and ammunition, airport bosses have a store full of discarded or lost goods, ranging from novelty handcuffs to a bucket and spade.

Mr Sunderland added: "Lost property is found in a range of situations.
"It can be lost on a plane, in the building and can be genuinely lost or just discarded.

"Passengers have up to one month to reclaim their property and then it is disposed of.

"Many valuable items will go to charity auctions, where they can provide monetary gain."

easyJet to retain one bag limit ‘to minimise confusion’

PASSENGERS flying on easyJet from Edinburgh Airport will still only be allowed to carry one item of hand baggage despite a wider relaxation of the rule which started yesterday. The airline has decided to keep the one-bag rule because not all airports across the UK have been given permission to change the restrictions like Edinburgh has.

Andy Harrison, easyJet's chief executive, said: "There is massive scope for customer confusion in an environment where UK airports are adopting different policies.

"The only way to maintain a simple and standard policy is to maintain our one-bag policy."

New number plate recognition system for mid-stay parking at Stansted

Parking systems company APT SkiData has extended its work at Stansted Airport by installing the very latest Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology at the mid-stay car park. The new machinery will enhance security and further improve the speed with which pre-booked passengers can access their parking.

The result is a car parking system that is designed to eliminate unnecessary queues and improve convenience. It also enables a complete record of all parked vehicles improving security and overcoming such issues as lost tickets.
