Gatwick drops one bag rule

Passengers travelling from Gatwick Airport will be able to carry more than one bag through security - as long as their airline also allows this - from next Monday, March 31st.

The government restriction limiting passengers to one item of carry on luggage was lifted at a number of other UK airports on January 7, and at Gatwick for transfer passengers in February. However, the airport’s overall restriction remained in place while new x-ray technology was installed in the central search areas. The work has now been completed.

Gatwick will continue to apply the Department for Transport’s cabin baggage restrictions, which the size of items to 56cm tall, 45cm wide and 25cm deep. In addition, some airlines operating at Gatwick - such as its biggest carrier, easyJet -have chosen to continue with a restriction of only one item of hand baggage. Passengers are advised to check with their airline before travelling to the airport.

More Brits go further for short breaks

Growing numbers of travellers are opting for long-haul destinations when booking a mini break, new research has revealed.

The study, carried out by Halifax, showed that more than 3.7 million Britons took a long-haul short holiday last year, clocking up a collective 5.5 billion travel miles.

Popular destinations for long-haul mini breaks included the USA - particularly New York and Los Angeles - as well as the Far East, India, Australia and the Caribbean.

This trend is set to continue in 2008, according to the report, with almost five million holidaymakers planning to take such holidays this year, particularly in light of improved inflight entertainment facilities and the rise of exotic hen and stag parties, as well as overseas weddings.

"Better airline quality, the lure of winter sun, favourable exchange rates and cheaper long-haul flights has created a boom in demand for long-haul mini breaks, with millions of us enduring long flights for a weekend break on the other side of the globe," commented Paul Birkhead of Halifax.

Last year, research by Alliance & Leicester indicated that an increasing number of over-50s seek to explore long-haul holiday destinations.

Luton Airport sees passenger boost

Some ten million travellers have passed through Luton Airport in the last 12 months, it has been revealed.

According to the airport, the figure represents a record number of passengers in its 70-year history.

It cited the launch of over 40 new routes and a number of new airlines making use of the airport as the main reason for the growth.

Most notably, premium-only airline Silverjet operates a range of double-daily business class flights to New York and daily services to Dubai from Luton Airport. It has also opened a lounge exclusively for its passengers at the airport, offering dedicated security and check-in services.

"Luton Airport, managed by TBI, has multiplied its passenger traffic by five in the last decade and is one of the most important airports in Great Britain in number of passengers and routes in service," the airport said in a statement.
