Opening of Britain’s largest underground tunnels at Hindhead
| July 27, 2011 | Posted by admin under Travel News |
Its good news for airport travellers using the A3 to reach their pre booked airport parking
at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports. Today the long awaited Hindhead tunnel opens to the public. Passengers returning along the A3 who have picked up their car from their airport car park will be able to drive home along the A3 through the southbound tunnel. The busy A3 London to Portsmouth road and was regularly affected by traffic congestion especially at peak times of the day caused by a traffic “bottle neck” at Hindhead.
The new tunnel is 1.25 miles (1.8km) long which makes it the largest under land tunnel to be constructed. The Highways Agency says that the new transport link is on time and on budget. The northbound tunnel is due to open in the next few days. The new tunnels construction includes very hi-tech additions with special traffic sensors and illuminated cats eyes all designed to help the flow of traffic passing through smoothly and safely.
The opening of the tunnel will improve the journey time for motorists heading to and from the M25. Less traffic congestion on the A3 is good news for passengers driving to Heathrow Airport to the west and Gatwick Airport and Stansted Airport to the East. Less stress and more time to arrive at the airport parking site and get off to a relaxed departure.
