Durham Tees Airport - MME
A Brief History
In 1963, the decision was made to close the former RAF Middleton St. George, and it was sold to Cleveland County Council who developed the site into a commercial airport. Princess Margaretha of Sweden opened the international passenger terminal in 1966. The airport has since been developed as a regional airport for the North East of England, and has expanded successfully ever since.
Traffic
Recently the airport's largest operating airline bmibaby announced it was to cancel all services thus leaving the airport with significantly fewer scheduled services. However Flyglobespan announced that they are to base two aircraft at the airport from Summer 2007, flying initially to Alicante, Faro, Málaga and Palma. The airline also announced a further five routes from the airport, these being Ibiza, Jersey, Mahon (Menorca), Nice and Pula (Croatia).
Additionally, Ryanair has announced a new route to Girona-Costa Brava Airport, and Wizz Air has announced a new route to Warsaw from late July 2007.
